Maria Von Trapp nee Rainer and her costume requirements

Maria is the main character in The Sound of Music and requires at least six different outfits throughout the show.

Starting in scene 1 as a postulant, Maria typically wears a plain grey or black dress with a postulant headdress, which is similar to the other nuns but shorter in length.

She also wears a selection of day dresses or an Austrian pinafore dress with short puffed sleeve blouse underneath. Her very plain dress causes Georg to make rude remarks and enables her to make a new dress from fabric supplied by Georg’s household.

Her trip to the Von Trapp mansion requires her to wear a light coat or jacket and a wide brimmed straw hat.

Later scenes require Maria to don a party dress, a wedding dress in 1940’s style, a honeymoon outfit and various 1940’s plain but smart clothing suited to her new lifestyle as Baroness Von Trapp.

Admiral Costumes have a wonderful selection of suitable outfits for Maria to transform her from a poor nun to a baroness in just a few short scenes and outfits are available in a variety of sizes and styles to suit your cast.

Costumes for all the other sound of Music characters are available including, nuns habits, tyrolean jackets, german uniforms, post boy and lederhosen.

1940's Vintage Wear

The 1940’s was a challenging decade for Britain recovering from WW2, with rationing still in place for materials making clothing scarce and many items were ‘make do and mend’.

Floral prints dominated the early 1940’s with skirt length just below the knee and skirts less full to save materials.

Padded and puffed shoulders created the style for the decade with small round or sweetheart collars.

Women’s hair was rolled and pleated forming elegant styles.

Admiral Costumes have an excellent  range of 1940’s style clothing for hire, suitable for theatrical productions, period plays and events like the Goodwood festival.

The Happiest Days of Our Lives

The Happiest Days of Our Lives is a 1950's play written by John Dighton.

Set in 1949, confusion reigns when St Swithin's Girls School is accidentally billeted at Nutbourne College: a boys school and the two heads, Wetherby Pond and Muriel Whitchurch try to cope with the chaos that ensues.

The parents of the St Swithins girls would consider it very improper for their daughters to be exposed to the rough mix of boys in Pond's school, and the comedy is derived from the attempts of the teachers to conceal the fact that the girls are now sharing a school that's full of boys. At the same time Pond, the boy’s headmaster, is offended at the suggestion that his boys are not suitable.

Admiral Costumes have some wonderful outfits absolutely perfect for the characters in this type of play. From the gym slips and boaters, to the games mistress with her white skirt and velvet jacket, to the overdressed mothers and matron, you will find a perfect outfit including accessories to complement your show.

Admiral Costumes are delighted to have supplied costumes to The Chameleons whose production is on this week.

Retro 70’s and vintage 1940’s photo shoot success

Admiral Costumes are delighted to have been part of a professional photo shoot organised by Kerry from Ella May Vintage, on location in the grounds of Experience the Country in Newton Longville.

Ella May is a gorgeous 70’s retro van ideal for hiring out for weddings, parties and picnics. What could be nicer to celebrate your special event than hiring a unique retro van that can be themed to your choice, having a themed picnic and dressing in themed clothing to complete your day.

Kerry’s son and his girlfriend Amber made natural models and looked the part in authentic 70’s flared jeans, waistcoats and accessories selected from Admiral Costumes’ extensive retro clothing range. Lisa, currently starring in the west end, added glamour with a stylish 70’s kaftan sequinned and floaty summer dress.

The young models worked really well together to provide some fantastic shots for professional photographer, Sally Crane.

Further interest was added by a superb vintage Daimler provided by Bev Short. “We’ve had the car for 18 years,” said Bev proudly, “and we absolutely love it.”  The models did too and some great pictures were taken inside and out of both vehicles.

Authentic 70’s styling by Janice from The Dandelion House, both inside the van and on the set, completed the retro look and it really felt that we were on a 70’s picnic.

A step back in time was created by impressive hair and make up stylist, LipstickCurls who did a magical job in turning the 70’s hairstyles into 1940’s rolled hairstyles typical of the period in an incredibly short space of time.

Jo from Rubies Vintage Teas expertly re-styled the van for the 1940’s using her extensive collection of props and accessories to provide some more superb shots for Sally.

“It makes perfect sense for us all to work together,” said Jo, “if anyone hires the van for a vintage day out, then they may want a vintage picnic and vintage clothing to complete their day.”

It has been a wonderful opportunity for a set of talented business ladies to work together to produce a set of photographs that will be used over the next few months to complement all our businesses and more shoots are planned with ideas for vintage weddings, 50’s and 60’s eras.

We all look forward to working together again soon on another exciting project.
