Swing, spot dresses and The Fringe

Having costumed Les Miserables, The Life and Times of Shakespeare and Bugsy Malone for many school productions last term, we looked forward to a fun and creative August here at Admiral Costumes.

Our stall at ‘Swingwood’, Swingrave’s salute to the Twinwood music festival, allowed us to showcase our bespoke 50’s style spot dresses and other specialist vintage clothing. It was great fun meeting dancers and joining in with a stroll workshop.

We love it when the shows we have costumed do well and we are delighted that Blues Brothers, Rat Pack and ‘We will be Free’ have received rave 5 star reviews at the Edinburgh Fringe.

We were delighted to work closely with Townsend productions to produce some amazing bespoke costumes for their new play ‘We will be Free’, a true story based on the Tolpuddle Martyrs, with new and beautiful music score written by John Kirkpatrick.

Our 50’s wear went down a storm at a 50’s coronation street party, creating some great pictures for our website and newsletters.

We are now working on outfits for the Goodwood Revival that takes place in September.

Flash Harry

Flash Harry is a delightful fictional character from the St Trinians series of films, first appearing in 1954, played by George Cole.

He is described as ‘an ostentatious, loudly dressed and unusually ill-mannered man’, officially ‘the chairman of the board of governors’ at St Trinians school for girls.

Flash Harry is a cockney who partakes in many shady dealings, but thoroughly trusted by the pupils.  He helps bottle and sell the gin that the girls distil in the school chemistry lab, places bets for them on the horses and runs a matrimonial agency for teenage 6th form girls, setting them up with wealthy men.

Flash Harry makes an excellent choice of character for fancy dress parties or 50’s events.

50’s coronation costumes

Admiral Costumes were delighted to provide a range of 50’s wear for a local coronation street party event.

It was fun to dress up the neighbours from Newton Longville in 50’s vintage style clothing for all ages. Children from age 10 chose either pretty full skirted 50’s dresses or tie front blouses.

The gents were quite adventurous, wearing a selection of Teddy Boy Jackets, T-Bird leather jackets, blazers and trilbys.  Billy Butlin was the MC for the day and Flash Harry wearing a 50’s suit and  trilby hat, sold garters and suspenders from the inside of his raincoat.

The ladies looked spectacular with some wearing cotton full skirted day dresses, complete with gloves and waspie belts, serving afternoon tea in the marquee.

The 50’s spot dresses were popular with those that grew up in the 50’s and were worn well into the evening for the jiving.

Romeo and Juliet - costumes for children

"Romeo, Romeo, wherefore art thou Romeo"

Sheakespeare’s play, Romeo and Juliet, is one of the best known and is extremely popular with schools studying the bard as part of the national curriculum.

We have recently costumed a scene for a year 5 production in medieval style with Romeo in a tudor style costume with breeches and feathered hat and Juliet in a long flowing dress with draped sleeves.

Capulet wore a silver and black tunic and trousers with distinctive hat and Tybalt a shirt and tunic with brown velvet cloak.

The rest of the year were divided into party goers or gentry , wearing either medieval style dresses with headdress or tunics, or poor villagers from stratford upon avon with drab skirt, shawl and mob cap for the girls and hat, breeches and jerkin for the boys.

Our quality costumes are suitable for all types of period productions so do give us a call on 01908 372504 or visit www.admiralcostumes.co.uk
