Soldier Costumes for ‘Our Country’s Good’
‘Our Country’s Good’ is a popular choice of play for Year 12’s
exploring the class system that operated in a convict camp in Australia during the
1790’s, with most of the characters based on real people.
The play was written by British playwright Timberlake
Wertenbaker in 1988 and was adapted from the novel The Playmaker by Thomas
Keneally.
The play is set in New South Wales and follows the fortunes
of a group of Royal Marines and convicts who have been sent to Australia to form
part of the first penal colony there.
Admiral Costumes have some lovely red military jackets
suitable for this play, with trousers or white breeches, tricorns and soldier
hats.

A murder is announced
This popular play by Agatha Christie is a superb ‘whodunnit’
set in the 1930’s.
The villagers of Chipping Cleghorn are summoned by a
newspaper notice to the house of Letitia Blacklock:
“ A murder is announced and will take place on Friday October
29th at Little Paddocks at 6.30pm”
Several villagers turn up anticipating an evening of murder
games, but become witnesses to a murder themselves.
Admiral Costumes have a superb selection of clothing from
this period suitable for Agatha Christie and other plays set in the 1930’s.
Typical costume requirements are butlers, maids, gardeners,
elegant ladies day and evening dresses, country gent tweed suits, blazers and
slacks and smart suits for a colonel.
We are delighted to be providing costumes for the Square
Drama Group’s production of this play in May and wish them every success.

Oh What a Lovely War Costumes
The tragedy of World War 1 is redefined in bawdy music hall
terms in this controversial play by Charles Chilton, written in 1963.
The title is derived from the music hall song Oh! It’s a
lovely war which is the main musical number in the production with other well-known
music hall songs, ‘It’s a long way to Tipperary’ and ‘Pack up your troubles’
The play is usually performed with the cast in Pierrot
costumes with images of war and shocking statistics projected behind the comic
action of the plot, which centres around a middle class family whose sons end
up in the war as cannon fodder.
‘Oh What a Lovely war’ is a popular theatre piece for
schools, youth theatres and drama groups and we have been delighted to provide
costumes for many productions throughout the UK.
Admiral Costumes have a good selection of WW1 army uniforms,
tin helmets and various other wartime artefacts suitable for this production.

Land Army Girls (WLA) costumes
The women’s land army (WLA) was set up during the first and
second world wars, to increase the amount of food produced in Britain.
With the men away in the military it became necessary to
encourage women to work in agriculture to replace the male farm workers.
The majority of the women were already from the countryside,
but a third came from London and other industrial cities in the north of
England.
Wearing a land army girl style costume for 1940’s events is
a great way to feel part of the festivities, whilst remaining warm and comfortable.
Many hair stylers, those on tea duties and ladies manning vintage stalls love
the land army girl look which is both practical and stylish.
Wear a pair of dungarees over a blouse, belt it with a thick
leather belt and finish the look with a tied headscarf and red lipstick.
Our Land Girl costumes have been worn on many vintage photo-shoots,
a hen party weekend at Billy One Horn Vintage events and at a hair styling
rally by Vintage Appeal.
To hire or buy land army girl dungarees for your event,

Admiral Costumes Vintage
What a fun vintage time we had at the Swingrave Vintage
Market on Sunday.
We took along some lovely vintage aprons, belts, jewellery, beads
and other accessories and a rail of specially selected vintage dresses and
clothing items to sell. Wingrave
community centre was flooded with swing lovers all enjoying the atmosphere and
looking for a bargain.
Swing music from the early 1940’s to early 50’s serenaded us
from 2- 4.30 and then Sophie Garner sung some gorgeous swing numbers live in a
half hour set until the Swing Dance started at 5.00pm.
Dressed as land army girls we set the scene in support of
the Wingrave 1940’s war archive and a 1940’s policeman and an RAF officer were
also seen mingling with the crowd.
Most of the dancers and stall holders looked stunning, dressed
in clothing from the 1940’s – 50’s for this event.
Admiral Costumes specialise in hire costumes for Twinwood,
Goodwood and other swing events, with a great selection of quality outfits to
choose from.
If you missed the market, our vintage rail and accessories
are available to browse through in our store in Newton Longville, Milton
Keynes.
